We are pleased to present our latest offering; this survivor, a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet. Produced from March 1956 to October 1959, the 220S (aka “Ponton”) was built in sedan, coupe and cabriolet configurations. The more common sedan had much higher production figures (~55,000), while only a few thousand (~3,500) coupes/cabrios were produced during this run. Of those, only 2,178 were Cabriolets. This example represents 1 of just 1,066 of the combined coupe/cabrio production for 1957. Highly collectible, it’s not known exactly how many remain in existence, but suffice to say – not many.
This particular 220S, a true survivor, has travelled an exceptionally well-documented 121k-miles. The original owner’s manuals and service booklet, included with the car, present an impressive record of maintenance at Mercedes dealerships from new. On August 3, 1957 this 220S (Chassis # 180030107505066) was delivered to Mr. A. Spencer of London, Ontario, Canada. The original service booklet, which documents the complete service history from day one with stamps (until the last available service entry in the booklet), has been photographed in the gallery. Mr. Spencer otherwise known as Canadian Major General Alexander Spencer, the original owner of the 220s servced in World War 2 as an engineering officer involved with planning the Normandy invasion.
The two-tone Brown/Cream paintwork is in good shape overall with deep shine and gloss. The car is believed to have had a single repaint in its life, as well as a single convertible top replacement. Chrome parts, including the large, signature Mercedes front grill are bright and clean with a light patina. The tan convertible top is in very good shape and opens smoothly; while the zip-open plastic rear window is clear without fading or yellowing. A cover is included to neatly tuck the folded top while cruising with the top down.
The interior presents itself with lovely patina in what appears to be original condition. The solid wood dashboard is absolutely stunning to see in person; believed to be all-original, and clearly crafted from a single piece of wood, it is unequivocally the star of the show inside the cabin. Settled within the wood dash is a typically 50’s gauge cluster, organized horizontally in neat boxes. The original Becker radio features in the center of the dash below an analog clock. Tan leather seating surfaces are soft and supple and show a nice patina on the upper halves. The interior headliner, a crushed velvet-like material, is clean and free of tears/rips.
The 2195cc Inline-6 Cylinder fires up quickly and easily, a sign of its regular maintenance, and comfortably moves the large 220S down the road. The four-speed column mounted shifter is easy-to-use and shifts cleanly through all the gears. In excellent running and driving condition.
